That’s the only explanation I can conjure for what happened: Ann pulled the plug on Alexa. Literally. With her life support disconnected, Alexa was dead. But Ann didn’t believe it. She was convinced that like Edgar Allen Poe’s “Tell-Tale Heart” Alexa was still aware and listening to whatever was — or wasn’t — going on in her home. (WARNING: I strongly suggest that sensitive readers skip the rest of this paragraph.) In a final burst of paranoia, Ann took a hammer and bludgeoned poor Alexa to pieces and then gathered up the shreds and threw them in a dumpster ten miles away. RIP Alexa.
I had no idea Ann was capable of such violence. Now whenever I talk to her, I am very careful not to say anything that could possibly upset her. I’m too young to die! Well, not really. I’m well beyond my Sell-By date.
I always contended that if not revealing my age would actually make me younger, I would be as tight-lipped as the enigmatic Mona Lisa; but since nothing can actually erase the years, why not just accept and admit them?
I realize that I am being slightly hypocritical about this issue in that I haven’t disclosed my age here. But if you meet me and ask me, I most likely will tell you.
