I have thought about whom I would like to be isolated with if given the chance. Obviously, my first choice would be those I love — especially any of them who can cook. Other than that, who? No, not George Clooney. There would be way too much pressure to try to look good 24/7. Instead, it would be very handy to have a tech support guy or gal ensconced in the guest room to solve my inevitable computer glitches… a plumber (clogged toilets are my nightmare, second only to a shortage of toilet paper)… an electrician (in case of a repeat of my recent smoke detector catastrophe when all three failed simultaneously on a Saturday night and each screamed “EVACUATE!” every five seconds)… And if one of these guys or gals knows how to fold a fitted sheet, that would be a big plus.
Another COVID silver lining is that with so many celebrities now appearing on TV from their homes —isolated from hotshot hair stylists, make-up magicians, and wardrobe wizards — we now see that they are not that much better looking than the rest of us. One particular example is Jennifer Aniston. As fans of the sitcom “Friends” years ago may recall, when Jennifer played Rachel, her lovely hair was as important a component of the show as any of the characters. Across the nation, salons were deluged by women demanding a “Rachel cut.” That was then. This is now.
Recently, Jennifer was a guest on one of the late-night TV shows. Though admittedly still attractive, her hair had wayward wisps sticking out alarmingly in all directions. Like the rest of us she desperately needs the intensive ministrations of a hair stylist. As for me, I have been snipping stray strands indiscriminately and relying on DIY coloring. It’s not pretty.
Will we ever resume our usual routines? Who knows? Meanwhile, until the COVID cloud dissipates, I am trying to stay positive and focus on the silver linings.
