And isn’t it great that people no longer “lie”! We simply “misspeak,” “fabricate,” “bend the truth” or dispense “disinformation.”
These days stores that don’t have effective surveillance systems to discourage shoplifters will inevitably suffer from “inventory leakage.”
Remember when people used to buy used cars? Not any more. If you can’t afford a brand new vehicle these days, you purchase one that was “pre-owned.” And no one ever buys a house that is falling down; now it’s a “fixer-upper.” Talk about a positive spin.
This works in many areas: Wouldn’t you rather have your daughter be an “escort” or a “lady of the evening” than a hooker or prostitute? Would you prefer your son to suffer from a “chemical dependency” than a drug addiction? Isn’t it much more socially redeeming to put criminals in “correctional facilities,” rather than prisons or jails? Wouldn’t you rather live next to a “sanitary landfill” than a garbage dump? Isn’t “adult entertainment” less offensive than pornography? Would you feel better if you heard that your husband visited a “gentlemen’s club” instead of a strip joint? Would it be worse to live in a slum than an “economically depressed neighborhood”?
And now one of my pet peeves: Why is a white-haired woman considered to be an old lady, but a white-haired man is a “silver fox”? And how come she has wrinkles, but he has “character lines”?*
I’ll have to give that more thought later. Right now I have to run. I hear my sanitation engineer’s truck coming down the street; and I haven’t put my refuse receptacles out yet.

*Editor's Note: At CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference 2013) this week, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell remarked about the Democratic Party: "Don't tell me Democrats are the party of the future," he said, "when their presidential ticket looks like a rerun of the Golden Girls. They got Hillary and Joe Biden."
Senator McConnell is six years older than former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
