White wines also require two different glasses — one for younger, crisp whites and one for more mature, fuller whites. And then, in addition, of course you must have flutes for sparkling wines ... smaller glasses for dessert wines ... etc., etc. Give me a break! Or at least a huge breakfront in which to store all this crystal — and a mammoth dining room to accommodate the breakfront. Am I going to have to move in order to serve wine in the correct glass? No. Come to think of it, since often I just pour my wine from a jug, empty jelly glasses work just fine — apple jelly for whites and raspberry for reds. I'll just have to remember never to invite Martha Stewart to any of my soirees.
No matter what we shop for today, the choices are bewildering.
Do you need a new pillow? Are you a side, stomach or back sleeper? What if you alternate among all these positions during the night? Do you want a firm, soft, or medium pillow? Memory foam or down/feathers? A body pillow or one for your head only? Microfiber or cotton? High thread count? Odor resistance? A cooling pillow? One with neck support? Trying to decide is guaranteed to give you insomnia — which presents a further dilemma. Which of the dozens of over-the-counter or prescription remedies should you take for that?
Food items are just as bad. How many different types of salad dressings, yogurts, pastas, crackers, deli meats, breads, sodas, canned veggies and fruit, frozen pizzas (in fact frozen everything), do we need. As for cereals, don't get me started!
Automobiles, computers, cell phones, eye glasses, cruises, sports equipment, TVs, jeans, washing machines, cosmetics, microwave ovens, health insurance, vacuum cleaners... No matter what we want to buy today, everything — from appliances to Zumba lessons — is available in a staggering variety. Even deciding which movie to see is a major challenge nowadays, with multi-plex cinemas featuring 20+ different films. Not like when I was young and almost every town had a single movie theater which showed one movie every week. Our choice was easy: Take it or leave it.
I could go on and on, but I don’t have the time. I desperately need a cup of coffee. But first I have to decide which of the seventy available K-cup flavors I’m in the mood for right now.
