But I’d give up all that if I could be someone who gets to say things like:
“You’d better get me a first class reservation on tonight’s jet
to Nice. If I don’t put in an appearance at the Cannes Festival, too
many people will be disappointed.”
***
“I don’t have a thing to wear to the Kennedys’ pool party at
Hyannisport.
Call Tiffany’s and have them deliver an assortment of diamond belly
button baubles.
***
“Paul who?...Well, tell Mr. Newman I can’t possibly go out with
him on such short notice. He’ll have to wait five minutes.
***
“I couldn’t have won this award without the help and support of all
the little people.”
***
“Please stop crying, Farrah. It won’t do any good. I refuse to tell you
who does my hair.”
***
“I’m sorry, Carl — you’ll have to find someone else to sharpen your
pencils.”
But seriously, when I get down to basics, I’d be happy just to be someone gutsy enough to have ignored this assignment and instead spent the time working on my in-progress movie script, which I’ve been postponing forever. Writer’s block.
Which brings me back to wishing I were Sybil Adelman. I bet she never has that problem. And if she does, she can always discuss it with Paul Newman.
