Doc Martin: Collection - Series 1-4
Acorn Media at Amazon
The very idea of becoming a fan of the protagonist of this series who is at times described as "dour, discourteous and dismissive" seems unlikely. However the comedy series has immense popularity in England, and now through PBS viewing on various channels, here in the US.
The series is filmed on location in Port Issac, Cornwall, a picturesque fishing village ... without a laugh track. Previously the village had hosted two other entertainments: The 1970’s TV show Poldark and Rosamunde Pilcher’s The Shell Seekers.
Clunes plays a London surgeon seeking a quiet practice due to a fear of blood and instead encounters a challenging group of eccentric patients, including the candid and comely school headmistress played by Caroline Catz.
We found a review of the series by Keith Watsonwriting in the British Comedy Guide that perhaps sums up the way viewers in England and the other side of the pond feel about the Doc:
"If I had to name a TV guilty pleasure, then Doc Martin would be near the top of the list, if guilt is the right way to describe being swaddled in an eiderdown of cosy eccentricity."
Martin Clunes has returned after taking a year off to be with his family and a fifth series is being filmed in Cornwall; we can hardly wait. In the meantime, the four seasons would make a great gift for a friend in need of laughter.
