The fact that the KCDC is headed by a black woman whose parents immigrated from Haiti is a pretty big change by itself. The elected officials who spoke at this rally reflected many more. They were:
Letitia Anne James, NY State Attorney General
Bill deBlasio, Mayor of New York City
Eric Adams, current Brooklyn Borough President and Democratic Party nominee to be the next Mayor
YvetteClarke, Member of Congress, whose parents came from Jamaica
Rodneyse Bichotte, Member of the NYS Assembly, whose parents came from Haiti
Farah N. Louis, Member of the NYC Council, whose parents came from Haiti
All of these six elected officials are black except Bill deBlasio; he’s married to a black woman and has two biracial children. Four of the six are women. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (white female) sent a letter which was read from the podium.
For someone who likes politics and likes to take photographs, this was a photo-op feast. For someone who has pushed for more women to be elected to office, it was a tasty one indeed. I’m still licking my lips.
