Saturday 9th April 2011 : The Bronte Society Annual Literary Luncheon: For 2011 we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of Patrick Bronte as we welcome Dr Tom Winnifrith to speak on Patrick Bronte and the Luddites.
Healds Hall was built in 1764, the largest house in the Spen Valley. It became famous through links with the Bronte family when came into the ownership of the Reverend Hammond Roberson, immortalised as the Reverend Helstone in Shirley.The Hall has been owned by the Harrington family since 1978.
Sunday 10th April 2011: Bronte Society Annual Spring Walk: this year's walk will take us to the hamlet of Cowan Bridge, site of "Lowood School" of Jane Eyre. We will also visit Tunstall Church along the way. Parking is available at the village hall. As usual, please bring sturdy footwear and waterproof clothing and, for this walk, a packed lunch.
June 3rd - 6th 2011 : Bronte Society AGM Weekend: further details (including a downloadable booking form) will be posted up shortly, but the format for our 2011 AGM will include the usual Monday full-day coach excursion, this year to Lothersdale, Kildwick and Gawthorpe Hall. Keynote speakers will include Ian Dewhirst and Salley Vickers, while our weekend's programme includes a special appearance by the Haworth Gilbert and Sullivan Group.
Friday 26th - Sunday 28th August 2011: The Bronte Society 2011 Conference: we are pleased to announce our 2011 Conference at Homerton College Cambridge.
To mark the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible, the Conference will explore the influence of the language and themes of this bible on the lives and works of the Bronte family. In addition to formal papers, we are looking to include in the Conference schedule a limited number of seminar sessions on the Conference theme.
