How To Do It
In 1972 Alex Comfort published The Joy of Sex: A Gourmet Guide to Lovemaking, which used the format of a cookbook ('Starters,' 'Main Courses') to introduce readers to new techniques and unusual sexual positions.
Show Me!
Show Me! by photographer Will McBride is a sex education book for children and their parents featuring nude photographs of children.
Our Bodies, Ourselves
With its first person accounts in which women openly and frankly share their experiences and thoughts about sexuality and reproductive health, Our Bodies, Ourselves encouraged women to take full ownership of their bodies.
Age of AIDS
What started out as a rare pneumonia in the early 1980s, AIDS quickly became a major public health concern.
Understanding AIDS
C. Everett Koop’s nomination as US Surgeon General by President Reagan was widely supported by members of the religious right and opposed by many women's groups and liberal politicians. But Dr. Koop disappointed his supporters when he acknowledged the rising HIV infection rate as a threat to public health.
Play Fair
When AIDS appeared in 1981, the gay community faced a conspiracy of silence. Only homosexuals, intravenous drug users and Haitians were being struck down, so there was no national urgency to address the spreading epidemic.
SILENCE = DEATH
When in 1981 NYC health officials failed to respond to the burgeoning AIDS crisis, writer Larry Kramer co-founded the Gay Men's Health Crisis, the first grassroots organization dedicated to providing information and support for people with the disease.
Abstinence Only
Abstinence-only-until-marriage sex education programs were designed with the hope of preventing adolescents from engaging in premarital sexual activity. Federal funding for abstinence-only programs began during the Reagan administration in 1981, and grew exceedingly until 2006, when funding leveled.
Condoms
While some form of condom had been used to prevent pregnancy since the European Renaissance (descriptions exist of Casanova using a condom made of sheep intestine), latex condom sales skyrocketed beginning in the 1980s as a way to prevent the spread of HIV.
The Millennium (2000 – the present)
In the digital age, free access to information about sex is more easy to come by than it has ever been before.
Sex ed on film and video
From the birds and the bees to dental dams and HIV, the evolution of social hygiene and sex ed films over the past hundred years has been as dramatic as the transformation of a zygote into an acne-plagued teenager.
