Joan L. Cannon

Joan L. Cannon liked to use her middle initial because so few of her maiden namesakes are left anywhere (Huguenot LaPrades). She was retired teacher, retail manager and author of three novels in paperback, Settling and Maiden Run, a collection of short stories called Peripheral Vision and her latest, a collection of poetry, My Mind Is Made of Crumbs, all available from Amazon and on order from independent booksellers.

Joan's most recent novel is Second Growth and can be purchased through Amazon. From childhood, there have been toss-ups for her avocations among reading, riding horses, painting, local flora and fauna and writing.

The So-called Mirror Image Has Become Oddly Suspect

Cannon writes: The ubiquitous cameras of our daily lives may is some ways replace some of the older functions of the looking glass, but they don't give rise to the emotional resonances stirred by passing a household fixture or treasure that has seen most of one's years of consciousness. The missing image of a loved one who saw the same reflected surroundings we can still see becomes a nearly visible ghost. There's a forbidding precision in a photograph, precious as it may be. Looking the Wrong Way: People Determined to Make the Past the Single Measure of the Present

Joan L. Cannon writes: It's not a cop-out to look ahead and try not to be obsessed by what has gone and can't be recalled; it's a way to make a day worth living. Not many can claim to know when the last of those days will be for them. There seems something foolish about trying to move through even a day without looking ahead. I'd be afraid of running straight (perhaps fatally) into an avoidable stone wall (I live in New England) or over a cliff and losing tomorrows I don't yet want to miss. more »

Even today, in our hurried, abbreviated attention to a printed page, we still value distinguished diction, carefully guarded and guided irony, and especially meticulous observation. It's worth the effort to enjoy this kind of writing once again. Economy of events substitutes for economy of explanation and description. The book isn't very long, but its shadow is. Not a lot happens, but what does pierces through to a layer below everyday intercourse. more »
