A FACTCHECK EXAMINATION

A Premature Attack

Pro-Bush group's ad faults Democrats for criticisms they haven't yet made, about a Supreme Court nominee who hasn't been named, to a vacancy that doesn't yet exist.

Evolution

The National Academies have designed a new Web page to allow easy access to books, position statements, and additional resources on evolution education and research.  Evolution is one of science's most robust theories, and the National Academies have long supported the position that evolution should be taught as a central element in any science education program. Over the past several years, there has been a growing movement around the country to include non-scientifically based "alternatives" in science courses.  Currently there are challenges to the teaching of evolution in some 40 states or local school districts. (Although the books are for sale, you are permitted to download them at the site free of charge.)

Women, Equality & Iranian Elections

From the site of Maryam Rajavi, President-Elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran:

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the Iranian Resistance's President-elect, hailed the courageous women and girls in Tehran and said, "Misogyny is the most central feature of the religious tyranny in Iran. It is the lifeline of this medieval regime."

She urged all international human rights and women's rights movements to condemn the clerical regime's misogynous policies and take urgent action to secure the release of protesters who were detained in Tehran's demonstration today.

Human Rights Watch issued a report on the Iranian elections with the following:

In this year’s presidential election, 89 women registered their candidacy, but none were approved. The Guardian Council has interpreted the criteria that presidential candidates be “religious or political personalities” to exclude women categorically.

From the Tharwa Project:

"This year the authorities didn’t allow a public celebration of the International Women’s Day, and in stead the Women’s Cultural Center held a gathering in a basement in central Tehran. Not just to celebrate the International Women’s Day but more so to mark the opening of a library focusing on women’s issues. Other than improving the awareness of women’s rights, the goal is to make the library a reflection of the women’s movement in Iran and to provide a free space for Iranian women who wish to do research for professional and/or private reasons."
